Current classes
Our weekly session is hosted by the Staten Island Urban Center. Tai Chi runs the first hour and Fu Jow Pai kung fu the second. Youth and adults train together, you're welcome at either class or both, and your first lesson is free.
| Day | Time | Class | Level |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tuesday | 7:00 – 8:00 PM | Tai Chi | All levels |
| Tuesday | 8:00 – 9:00 PM | Fu Jow Pai Kung Fu | All levels |
Tuesday is our only group class at present, but our head instructor keeps additional availability outside class hours. If Tuesday evenings don't work, book another time — your first lesson is free either way.
The two disciplines
Fu Jow Pai — Tiger Claw Kung Fu
Traditional instruction in the Tiger Claw system: forms, footwork, conditioning, and practical self-defense, taught alongside the etiquette and history of the art. Students advance through the lineage's traditional curriculum at their own pace. No prior experience needed.
Tai Chi
Slow, low-impact movement practice focused on balance, breathing, joint mobility, and stress reduction. Suitable for adults and seniors of any fitness level, including those who cannot take part in high-impact exercise. Come as you are.
Scholarship places for young people
The reason this organization exists is to put young people in these classes who would not otherwise get there. If cost is the obstacle, say so — that conversation is a normal part of enrolling here, not an exception, and it happens privately.
Scholarship students attend the same classes as everyone else, at the same times, held to the same standard. We don't run a separate track for funded students and we don't identify who is on scholarship, because singling children out undoes the point of including them.
Families, schools, and youth workers can all refer a young person. Reach out and we'll arrange a free first lesson with no commitment.
The rest of the center
Our name says arts, not martial arts — 少林艺术中心 uses 艺术, the arts in the creative sense — and that was chosen deliberately. Martial arts is the first discipline we opened, not the limit of what we intend to teach.
The reason is practical. Combat is not the right door for every young person. Some are drawn to making things rather than to sport, and what actually does the work here — a structured craft, a teacher who expects you to meet it, older students to measure yourself against — transfers into a studio just as well as a training hall.
Music production
Planned instruction in recording, production, and performance, drawing on our head instructor's professional background as a recording artist.
Film and video
Planned workshops in shooting and editing, including documenting the school's own demonstrations and events.
These programs are not yet running. They depend on funding, space, and instructors, and we will publish schedules here once they are real — not before. If you'd like to help make them happen, or teach in one, get in touch.
Our locations
Shaolin Arts Center does not operate its own training hall. We teach in partnership with established community institutions, which keeps our costs low, our classes affordable, and our programs inside places young people already know.
Staten Island Urban Center
Host of our current weekly Tuesday evening classes in Tai Chi and Fu Jow Pai kung fu.
Snug Harbor Cultural Center
Grounds we use for outdoor seasonal training sessions and public demonstrations, as scheduled.
Class locations vary by season and program. Confirm the venue for a specific class before you travel — the schedule above lists our regular weekly session.
